    How To Wash Silk

    How To Wash Silk.

Firstly, I have to say well done for reading this before you attempted to wash a silk piece at home. Unfortunately for me, the first time I attempted to wash a silk piece of my own, it ended up in utter disaster, and I am talking a veerryyy expensive piece ended up with holes in it from using a really strong product. I don't want that experience for you.

Washing a luxury fabric can be a little scary and give you a bit ( or a lot) of anxiety thinking about the process. The good thing is that we are starting to see more and more silk products come in the market that are machine washable silk (finally).

So let's talk about how to wash silk correctly.

    • Firstly, this may or may not seem obvious however, I have to say it. The first step is to read the wash care instructions that come with the garment. This will state specifically how to wash and care for this type of garment or fabric. If it states "dry lean only" it means the fabric is very delicate and should be taken to a professional dry cleaner.
    • Secondly, never bleach. Ever.
    • Do not dry in direct sunlight as this can damage the colour of the fabric. ( I have made this mistake, so I can say first hand it's a pain in the *** to see it happen)
    • Do not tumble dry. This can shrink your silk.
    • Use a good quality product that has been designed for silk.

How To Wash Silk In A Washing Machine

If you have a silk product that can be washed in a machine, please use a delicates washbag also known as a lingerie washbag. Once it is out of the machine, use a towel to soak up any excess water then lay flat to dry (remember not to put in direct sunlight)

    How To Hand Wash Silk

If you are taking the hand wash option, please use cold water, fill the basin (make sure it is clean) and submerge the silk into the water. Add some detergent that is suitable for silk, then leave for a few minutes.

Once a few minutes has passed, move the silk garment around, to break up any dirt in the garment. Then rinse in cold water to remove the dirt and soap away.

Absorb any excess water in a towel, please be sure to be gentle and not rub.

Hang or lay flat on a clothes rack (out of direct sunlight)
